What have you done to your Elgrand today?

Yea I was contemplating getting one instead of trying to paint this one. I'll probably get new handles too. As for the grill? May see if it will sand so I can paint it black

The captive nut on this one was no longer captive so I had to grip it with mail grips and then undo it
 
Expected to be using my black one to tow the boat to the river just to give the boat a run and test before taking it on the sea on Firday. Pulled up tonyhe boat, dam I'd left the 13pin to 7pin towing adapter in the caravan. Phoned around local car shops, do you have a 13 pin to 7pin adapter? No. Went to the caravan to get the adapter, a bit late for going boating by the time we got back. Went shooting with my son instead. Black one is running ok again with the used replacement alternator from the scrap engine in the yard.
 
Changed front pollen filter today.... needed doing old one weighed a ton!
Removed passenger door trim to access mirror electrical connection.
Need to replace mirror as it had been 'glued' to stop it falling off!
Replaced tailgate struts.
Didn't realise how heavy the tailgate is when trying to prop it up.
Now a lot better... even works fine with the bike carrier attached.

Removed the paint and rust from rust spots around the number plate, then moved it out side and put the golf on the drive ready for work tomorrow.

With thanks to @Tino and @AlanM I am in possession of a new front wheel bearing saving around 70€ in shipping and duty. So, today I began the replacement process. The knuckle/hub came off without too much bother. The ABS sensor was stuck fast as I suspected so I unplugged it from the loom and removed it all along with the hub. Still, even with it on the bench, there was no way it was coming out without mullering it and even with a blowtorch it put up resistance, so I'll be needing a new one of those too.

The bearing was a complete swine to remove from the knuckle having had 23 years to seat itself in. Further use of the blowtorch and a session with a mallet followed by a six ton press and finally it let go with a bang and by this time it was split into its two halves.

Tomorrow I will reassemble it all other than the ABS sensor. Originals seem ludicrously expensive so I've ordered a cheapy from Hong Kong and we will see what happens. I'll be driving around with warning lights until it arrives.

Happy to help, you have helped me on multiple occasions so it's the least I could do!
 
Finished fitting the bearing and went for a test drive. The rumbling in left hand bends has gone but there's another road speed noise which I thought might be due to the bearing also. Could be a tyre so I'll have to do a swap round. Keeps bleating ABS and 4WD error so will be glad to see the new wheel sensor.

That's true on mine. It's had a plug in mile converter chip so it averages (on the display) around 5km/L but that's actually 5 miles per litre, so whilst bad, not as bad as it looks.

That's even on a run though. Came back from Dorset yesterday and that was my average, but with quite a lot of traffic.
 
Incidentally a couple of minor hiccups from the driving this week.

I'm pretty sure I boiled my brake fluid on the very steep hills coming into Lyme Regis yesterday. Discs and pads are only c. 500 miles old all round so it's not those. What spec of brake fluid is best for the E51?

Also noticed some odd behaviour from the aircon on long drives - after a couple of hours driving, the air pressure coming out of the vents drops to pretty much nothing. What little air that comes out is still cool, but the flow rate is next to zero so not enough to keep the car cool. After stopping for a bit (like a lunch stop at the services) the aircon works normally again - for a while at least. Blower motor sounds like it's working the whole time even when the flow rate is low. Any ideas?
 
Currently balls deep in the wife's.... Ay! You dirty minded lot... Wheel arch repairs.... 🤣🤣🤣.
Just replaced the inner lip now just making the outer and get it welded it shortly. I would post pics but for some reason every time I do using Tumblr it says the link is blocked... 🤷🤷🤷

The best brake fluid I have used is ATE TYP200 and can be purchased from eBay.
my air con did exactly the same thing but presumed it had been overfilled It was on a very hot day and the fan was on low what I did switch the air con off leave the fan on and it cleared it It hasn't happened since That was three years ago.
