Years ago I was pulled over by police for driving a bit quick, wound my window down and the officer said "I can smell alcohol". I said "So can I but I just squirted the windscreen and it's the screenwash".. which was true. He didn't even breathalyse me or do me for speeding.

I don't do that kind of thing (and don't think you do) but if I did I don't think a similar excuse like "It'll be my air freshener officer" would have worked lol.

Many moons ago I was out and about with a couple of my friends and one of them decided as we pulled up at a set of lights alongside each other that he'd try to race me off the lights (bit silly as I was driving a 1.3 Nova SR and he was in a Merc 190E 3.2 AMG - the outcome was obvious). What my friend hadn't noticed at the time (and I had) was that he had a police car behind him.

Cue enthusiastic launch away from the lights on his part followed by blue lights... plod pulled him over whilst I pootled past having a chuckle.

Caught up with him later on, he'd got away with a warning, but probably not for the reason you might think...

After being pulled over, plod tapped on the window, and the conversation went something like this...

"Step out of the vehicle, please sir."
"OK"
"Is this your car, sir?"
"No"
"Do you have insurance for this vehicle?"
"No"
"Do you know what the speed limit is on this road?"
"No"
"Well it's a 30mph limit down here. What speed were you doing?"
"No idea, I wasn't driving"
"Are you trying to be clever, sir?"
"No, but this is a left-hand drive car and I'm the passenger. I think you should be having this conversation with the driver..."

Cue a red-faced policeman... Guess he didn't feel like he could lecture my mate about failing to observe the speed limit when he'd failed to observe who was actually driving the car or which side the steering wheel was on before launching into his questions...

Test passed. Expected work, rear brake pads and wiper blades. Unexpected work was a track rod end.

Worst expence was £50 for a taxi due to grandchild 5 of 6 being sent home from school which meant I lost my lift.

Service and repairs carried out at Vine Place. Had a good chat with a member of staff who owns an Elgrand and recognised Magnu from a Carlisle Autoshow back when @dognero owned her.

Always good advice. I've been a customer since 2021 and they have my trust, which is just based on my personal experience.
 
After looking at the gearbox oil how to I checked it now I know where the dipstick is, super clean 👍

Removing the hub nut was difficult, 1/2" long breaker bar with a scaffold pole on it and the breaker bar was just bending, loads of penetration oil didn't help, heating the nut didn't help (didn't want to get it too hot and risk damaging the CV), got it off with a 3/4 breaker bar and scaffold pole. The rest was very easy but I expected it to be easy because I have changed this bearing before (so there wasn't a lot of corrosion binding it in) and I bought a replacement beairng complete with new drive plate attached.

I think I'll probably always buy bearings complete with driveplate attached in future, it saves messing with the press but it also means you don't have to worry about damaging the old driveplate so can give it some hammer to help remove the bearing.

I thought I could hear a little wheel bearing grumble a few months ago but checked every wheel, no play and no noise with the wheels of the floor at that point. With the new bearing fitted it is noticeable quieter but there is still something that sounds like wheel bearing noise from the front when I turn left, again no noise or play with the front wheels off the floor but I'll be replacing the drivers side front wheel bearing (and maybe the passenger side front bearing) anyway.

Help! My E51 has failed on front and rear wheel bearings (1 of each), and my mechanic can't find a supplier for the front bearings. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
