WHAT THE FUCK???!!!!

On lots of forums, EV (and emissions) posts often descend into politics, which of course mods don't like. The thing is though, EVs exist (at least in today's form/production) BECAUSE of politics, so it's difficult to separate the two. EVs *are* politics.

The vast majority of the sales are fleets.
Mind you, on Autotrader shed loads got £10-15K off, as dealerships struggle to shift them to meet (politics again) ZEM
 
If you read the history of how the petrol/internal combustion engine came about (I can't stand the buzz acronym 'ICE'), it was via 'natural' ingenuity, invention, adoption etc.
It didn't come about because a bunch of world politicians/governments said it had to.

As for petrol cars they are often set on fire on purpose, so the elderly can keep warm.

An argument often made is resistance is akin to people on horses and carts in the olden days moaning about changing to a vehicle. Which is a bit clutching at straws, as how can one compare a horse and cart to a car which allow one much shorter travel times and distances etc. That was a revelation. Also, I wonder if a Gov't ban on horses and carts was brought in to prevent said horse and cart owners from buying a new horse and cart in a few years on. Indeed, could an irony argument be made that the ev is a lower case return to that. It takes far more time, I guess, charging up along a route from Taunton to Newcastle than it does in a petrol or diesel car. Range anxiety and charger rage might have been a bit lower on a horse and cart though lol

Only last week I pulled up in my up! gti with the dog for a walk, shortly after filling it up which took, what, 3 mins. A guy was on a public charger in the Yystrad Myanch place in an i.d Buzz.. I took the dog for a walk for a solid hour, came back and he's still sitting there in his Buzz, on the charger lol Even he laughed when I said 'this took me minutes to fill at the petrol station, mate'

I would be more concerned about the cost of charging away from home than the time, the time can be factored in but often the cost per kWh mile from public pay chargers is greater than the equivalent of fuel in ice, I like ice it's not really a buzz word it's just a lot easier to type than internal combustion and saves differentiation away from petrol,diesel,log hybrid etc so I will type ice whenever possible 😂

Electric cars and delivery vehicles were electric right at the start but went out of favour as petrol was cheap.

Look how long it took to get a diesel engine that is powerful and relatively clean to run, first production diesel 1933, it wasn't till the late 2000s when common rail and dpf were put together and that caused a minefield of other problems, electric is still in its infancy and it is only the batteries that are the real challenge, everyone is working on that issue.

They will get safer and cheaper, now china is in on the game it's accelerating drastically, range will go up year on year, it is happening, like it or not.

Porsche has made some improvements to the Taycan's electric motors for 2025 to help improve performance, and the base rear-wheel-drive model hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds at our test track and the estimate that the Turbo S will do the deed in as little as 2.1 seconds.

Is that Sporty enough?

Probably not. It's ~ 2.3 tonnes, heavier than an Elgrand. i.e heavier than a 8 seater 4.83m MPV! Next you've got no manual transmission., so at least for me the level of involvement is down from the start of it.
So you'll have great one trick pony straight line acceleration (if the tyres can handle the torque), which like me between the sheets, is all over in 2 seconds. Granted its RWD.
So I seriously would prefer to grad the keys to my 990kg up! gti, not even the MX5, and have a blast down the twisites, rev matching etc, and using all the 'performance' it has, with decent enough light weight handling for my own modest capabilities (giving me mid 50s mpg as well, and which takes 3 mins to fill up, but I appreciate those are hardly sporting credentials), rather than just straight line acceleration with no gearbox.
 
If you look at some of the EV lap times around the Nurburgring you will see they are quick everywhere, i refuse to use the words ' around the Twisties' for obvious reasons.

I do agree with you on many points, as I am still a petrol head, and have no intentions of buying any electric vehicle. I still prefer the sound of my '74 Chevy Camaros 5.7L V8 with its straight through exhausts. But you have to admire the sheer accelaration of these electric cars. I deliver them for a company, and have driven a couple of Taycans recently and boy do they go! But you can't beat the rumble from the V8, but the Elgrand V6 comes a close second!
