There's a few different types, can get engine heaters that plug in like Pete mentioned, they plumb in to the engine coolant (heater) circuit so do pump coolant (read heater water in this context) around the system because they need to pump it around if they're going to heat the engine. Campers might add to that system by modifying other bits of the car so the heater will still work with the ignition off. But lots of vehicles (German stuff especially) have a factory fitted little pump that will still circulate water around the engine and heater matrix and allow the heater to blow at a slow speed when the ignition key is in the accessory position, it allows the heater to continue to work for a short while when the engine is turned off providing the engine is already warm.

My Rover 75 has an auxiliary diesel burning heater that ciruclates the coolant to preheat the engine activated by text message.
 
I suppose that many like me, browse the aisles of Lidl/Aldi (mainly Lidl) for the might be useful items. A while back I picked up an "Ultimate Speed Portable Jump Starter with power bank" I think it cost £29, thought it might be useful to charge phones etc at Rock Festivals/other locations that don't have a hook-up. So today went out to start Ed and was going to take for a run down the A3 for a bag of chips (don't tell Khal). The dread click click no-start, feck me MOT as well on Monday. Thought I get it sorted tomorrow. Flash of inspiration, i'll try the starter bank, not expecting much. It was nearly charged so put on charge for about 1/2 hour, all 5 blue lights, connected to Ed and he started no problem. Never expected it to work WTF do I know.

What a great bit of kit, very compact and easy to use.

I saw one of those in Lidi (I have a Noco so didn't need one) and wondered how good they would be. So it sounds like it could be a cheap option for anyone wanting a jump pack, but can't or don't want to buy an expensive one.

Edited to add the news that the PM says that we need AI.
I wonder if AI would solve the above problem. I would guess that a monkey could manage it, or perhaps a 10 year old kid, but not a politician.
Further edited to add that the liklihood of the UK getting AI is (aparently) reduced by the fact that AI is energy hungry and .... wait for it .... THe UK can't produce enough energy to run it.
Which takes us neatly back to the Scottish windfarms.

I've just found out the forum wont let me post the word h a v i n g. I thought maybe its certain words and characters the forum won't let us post but it turns out that others can post the word h a v i n g with no problems.

The day has barely started and already I want to just sack off everything and everyone.
Negotiated a broadband supply contract via telephone with VirginMedia on 30th November. Due to start on 4th Jan. 2bd December, got a materially better offer from Plusnet, which VM couldn't match, so told them to shove it. Get a bill a few days ago for "early termination charge" of nearly £500. Distance selling laws, anyone? Been on to them several times and have been told I don't owe anything, that they owe me £30, £25, 20, £ 27 and £17.42 depending on which Indian grad student I've spoken to. Apparently, they can't update the bill, despite being in the billing team, the cancellation team, the resolution team etc etc etc.

Youngest brother in law and partner are divorcing. Been a lot of sickness, distant and sheepeosh around us for a good 10 months. Complaining about stress of PIP claim, not been given the benefit despite epilepsy etc. I've repeatedly offered to look at the application and the decision letters as I spent years making the decisions. Never took me up on it. Must have had enough as the correspondence finally turned up last night. Needless to say, whomever has been advising him is a clown. But it also turns out he HAS been given top rate for mobility, as I would have expected and mandated in the guidance for the benefit. So he's been lying to us about being totally broke for the last two years and also transpires that he has effectively been pimped out by his husband for years, and has been HIV+ for four years. He rang up to berate my wife for her asking about his meds (she's a nurse) and insist he had no idea how he got it (errr ....nope, you do know how...) and "I've done all the courses so I know better than anyone"....so how come you want everyone else to sort out your claim, help you do x y and z?
Then came the "well you knowI had cancer, and they've found a spot on my lung and on my liver so I've been very stressed'
2 years ago he had a ball removed. And he still hasn't given up the smoking and drinking.
I give up.take some damned responsibility.
