Hi... do you need to have the Elgrand de-cat or not.. had differing advise from sellers?

Yes you need to have at least the rear cats done. A lot of traders do this by default, or if you buy one that hasn't had cats done it will cost around £100 for rear cats to be decored.

most members get the rears done and some get all 4 done some sellers will tell you there is not a problem my advice would be go with a seller who will decat and underseal as part of there services try one of the dealers on here and all that will be done plus they are very knowledgeable with all things Elgrand just look through what you can on here or become a premium member happy hunting

Thanks Bob.. thought we had found one today but the interior wasn’t what we wanted.. I know we can change seats and carpets but this guy said we didn’t need to de cat.. keep looking!!!

Yes, best not buy from someone who says cats aren't a problem. Nissan know it's a problem so I think they should know best.

The reason for decatting is that the front cats can disintegrate over time and block the secondary rear cats. If this happens it's instant engine destruction. So by removing the rear cats, if the fronts do deintegrate there will be nothing there to become blocked.

The secondary cats are only fitted due to much stricter emission laws in Japan, they are not needed in the UK as the Elgrand will easily pass the MOT test without them.

Hope that explains the situation.

As others have said, a couple of hundred to have the rear cats removed or quite a few thousand to replace the engine. Some owners don't bother, but maybe the have more money than sense, or just no sense at all?!

Mine is booked in Wednesday for decore and undersealing then I will be able to sleep lol heard too many horror stories 😨
It is a relief when you get it done, I had the same feeling. Another little bonus is that the exhaust note sounded sportier on mine with de-cored rears.

Newbie question, (don't have one yet, still researching), is decatting necessary on all of them, or just the 3.5?

All E51s that is.
This is all explained in the Before You Ask section of the forum
